Hot Water Installation Done to Australian Standards

A hot water replacement is more than swapping one unit for another. Every installation we carry out meets AS/NZS 3500 and NSW plumbing regulations, which means correct tempering valve settings to protect against scalding, compliant relief valve drainage, proper electrical or gas connection by a licensed tradesperson, and safe removal of the old system. Serkan and the team are fully licensed plumbers and gas fitters under licence 490232C, so gas work is handled in house rather than subcontracted out. We size the system to your household rather than defaulting to a like for like swap, because an undersized unit is the most common reason people end up replacing again sooner than they should.

No hot water?

Why Your Hot Water Has Stopped Working

Losing hot water is never convenient, and it usually happens on the coldest morning of the year. Some causes are a straightforward repair, others mean the system has reached the end of its life. Here is what we most commonly find, and what it means for you.

Pilot light or ignition failure

On gas systems, a pilot light that will not stay lit often points to a faulty thermocouple or gas valve. Usually repairable and one of the cheaper fixes.

Failed heating element or thermostat

On electric systems, no hot water at all usually means the element or thermostat has burnt out. A common repair on an otherwise healthy tank.

Water is warm but never hot

Often a thermostat setting, a partially failed element, or sediment build-up reducing the tank's effective capacity.

Leaking from the tank

Water coming from the body of the tank rather than a fitting means the cylinder has corroded through. This cannot be repaired and the system needs replacing.

Rusty or discoloured hot water

Brown or metallic smelling hot water usually means the sacrificial anode has gone and the tank is corroding internally. Replacement is generally close.

Hot water runs out too quickly

Either the system is undersized for the household, or sediment has reduced its usable volume. We will tell you which before recommending anything.

If your hot water has stopped completely, call us on 0416 847 805. We carry common parts on the van and can often restore hot water the same day.

Honest advice

Repair It, or Replace It?

Plenty of plumbers will quote a new system without checking whether the old one can be saved. We will tell you straight which makes more sense, because a repair that buys you another five years is a better outcome than a replacement you did not need.

Repair

Usually worth repairing when

  • The system is under 8 years old
  • The tank itself is not leaking
  • The fault is an element, thermostat, valve or thermocouple
  • The repair cost is well below a replacement
Replace

Usually worth replacing when

  • The system is over 10 to 12 years old
  • Water is leaking from the tank body
  • It has already needed several repairs
  • The household has outgrown its capacity
  • A more efficient system would cut running costs

Choosing a system

Hot Water System Types We Install

The right system depends on your household size, what is already connected and what you want to spend upfront versus over the life of the unit. We install and service all major brands including Rheem, Rinnai, Dux, Aquamax, Bosch, Vulcan and Thermann.

Gas storage

Reliable and quick to recover, suited to households with an existing gas connection. Lower upfront cost than heat pump or solar, with moderate running costs.

Continuous flow (instantaneous)

Heats water on demand with no tank, so it never runs out and takes up far less space. Well suited to smaller homes, apartments and granny flats.

Electric storage

The lowest upfront cost and simplest to install where no gas is connected, though running costs are typically the highest of the options.

Heat pump

Draws heat from the surrounding air and uses a fraction of the electricity of a standard electric system. Higher upfront cost, substantially lower running costs, and currently supported by NSW government rebates.

Solar hot water

Roof mounted collectors with gas or electric boosting. Strong long term savings in Sydney's climate, with a higher install cost and roof suitability to consider.

Not sure which you need?

Tell us your household size and what is currently installed and we will give you a straight recommendation with the running cost difference, not just the cheapest option to fit.

Worth knowing before you replace

NSW Heat Pump Rebates

NSW offers incentives for households replacing an electric storage hot water system with a more efficient heat pump, delivered through the state's energy savings schemes. For many homes this brings the upfront cost of a heat pump much closer to a like for like electric replacement, while cutting running costs considerably.

Eligibility depends on your existing system, your property and the model installed, and the schemes change from time to time. We will tell you honestly whether your replacement is likely to qualify and what the real difference would be, rather than quoting a rebate figure you may never see.
